Getting your licence: the process step by step

Getting your licence takes five steps: registering with a driving school, applying at the licence office, theory training and exam, practical training, and the practical exam.

1. Registration

You register online or in person. We then go through the process and costs with you personally.

2. Application

For the application you usually need:

  • ID card or passport
  • Biometric photo
  • Eye test
  • Proof of a first-aid course

3. Theory

You attend theory lessons and study on your own until you feel confident. Then you take the theory exam.

4. Practice

In your lessons you build up confidence. This includes the required special drives on country roads, on the motorway and after dark.

5. Practical exam

As soon as you are ready, you take the practical exam. Once you pass, the licence is yours.

Status of the licence reform

A reform of driver training is going through the legislative process (as of October 2026). The current rules apply until it takes effect. We will tell you what applies to you when you register.
