Trailer licence: B96 or BE?
With class B you can tow trailers up to 750 kg or up to 3.5 t in total. B96 allows combinations up to 4,250 kg after training with no exam. Class BE allows trailers up to 3.5 t and requires a practical exam.
| Class B | B96 | BE | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limit | Trailer up to 750 kg, or combination up to 3.5 t | Combination up to 4,250 kg | Trailer up to 3.5 t |
| Proof | Class B licence | At least 7 hours of training | Practical exam |
How to work it out
- Check the vehicle documents of your car and trailer.
- Add the two gross weights together.
- Up to 3.5 t, class B is enough. Up to 4,250 kg you need B96, and above that BE.
FAQ
Does the actual weight count, or the permitted weight?
What counts is the gross weight in the vehicle documents, not the actual weight.
Is BE better than B96?
BE allows heavier combinations. If 4,250 kg is enough for you, B96 is usually the quicker route. We will advise you based on your combination.
